Description

bans off our bodies, original mixed media painting, 2022

Bans Off Our Bodies is a 16″ x 16″ mixed media acrylic painting featuring a bright orange dahlia blooming from hand-painted text. The text used in the painting was taken directly from page 52 of the dissenting opinion in the Dobbs v. Jackson decision:

To allow a State to exert control over one of ‘the most intimate and personal choices’ a woman may make is not only to affect the course of her life, monumental as those effects might be. It is to alter her ‘views of herself’ and her understanding of her ‘place in society’ as someone with the recognized dignity and authority to make these choices. Women have relied on Roe and Casey in this way for 50 years. Many have never known anything else. When Roe and Casey disappear, the loss of power, control, and dignity will be immense.

This listing is for a 16″ x 16″ original mixed media acrylic painting. Your 16″ x 16″ painting on paper arrives as pictured, matted in a 20″ x 20″ black frame ready to hang.

All fromSteph wall art ships free in the US, typically in 3 to 7 business days.

about the Dissent Dahlias series

Dissent Dahlias is an installation featuring nine framed works inspired by the overturning of Roe vs. Wade in June of 2022. Nine were created to represent the nine Supreme Court justices. The text featured in the paintings is taken directly from the dissent written by Justices Kagan, Sotomayor, and Breyer in the Dobbs decision. Dahlias were chosen because they represent strength in the face of adversity. A big thank you to Farmgirl Flowers for the amazing bunch of fresh dahlias that somehow stayed alive and intact all the way from the PNW to Florida and survived multiple photo shoots.
